We have some sad news to share with Studio Tour visitors…
Bob Blackburn, a talented artist and true gentleman, who took part in many Wirral Open Studio Tours, passed away this week at the age of 92.
For those who didn’t know him, he worked for many years as a respected teacher of art, whilst also pursuing his own creative path, painting mainly in oils. Throughout his long career, he held many one-man shows across Wales and North West England.
He joined the Wirral Open Studio Tour in 2010 and opened his house in Meols each year until 2017, enthusiastically welcoming the many, many visitors who loved to see his work. Although failing health meant that he was unable to take part in the Tour for the past two years, he still felt compelled to create and, with the help of his carer, was still able to paint until two weeks ago..
For anyone who knew Bob, or who would like to show support, his funeral will be held on Thurs 21st November, 3.30pm at St Luke’s Church, 19 Market St, Hoylake, CH47 2BF
Rest in peace Bob, and thank you for sharing your love of art with so many. xx
You may have heard the sad news of the devastating fire at Carla Pownall’s studio last week; her studio and all her equipment were destroyed in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately her insurance will not pay out so we are raising money to get her up and running again – hopefully well before our open studios weekend next June! If you would like to help with a donation – however small, every little helps – there is a Just Giving page here.
If you have not had the chance to visit Carla’s studio then you can find out a bit more about it in this lovely video.
We are pleased to announce the artist line up for the 2019 Wirral Open Studio Tour. This year we have 65 artists taking part in 34 studiosright across Wirral so there will be plenty to see!
Our tour guide brochures are being distributed to libraries, community centres, galleries, cafes and shops right across the peninsula now so you will be able to pick one up to plan your own tour of the studios, or you can download one here.
Thank you to all the amazing artists who have applied to take part in the 2019 Wirral Open Studio Tour. We are sifting through the applications now (lots of oohs and ahs!) before beginning the hard work of putting the tour together.
Artists will receive confirmation soon and we will publish the list of artists here as soon as we can!
Calling all Wirral artists … Applications for the 2019 Wirral Open Studio Tour are now open!
We would like to invite Wirral based professional and semi-professional fine and applied artists to submit their applications to take part in this year’s Wirral Open Studio Tour.
The 2019 event will take place over the weekend of 8th-9th June. This will be the 10th time the Wirral Open Studio Tour has run so of course we are aiming to make it the best yet! We are very grateful to Micheline Robinson for starting it off all those years ago. The open studio weekend is different from any other local arts event, giving visitors the opportunity to see artists in their working environment and to really engage with what they, and their work, are all about. Our visitors tell us that this is one event they really look forward to each year, planning their own ‘tour’ of the studios with great care.
Last year, nearly 70 artists benefited from taking part in the Tour, welcoming hundreds of visitors from across the Wirral and surrounding areas into their studios, workshops and display spaces, making sales, accepting new commissions and creating valuable contacts. If you would like to take part this year, please apply using our online form here. The deadline for all submissions is midnight, Sunday 3rd February 2019.
If you have any questions or are wondering whether the event is right for you then please get in touch.
Many many thanks to all the lovely people who visited the studios open for the 2018 Wirral Open Studio Tour; and of course to all the lovely artists who opened their studios – without you there wouldn’t be a tour. We hope you all had as much fun as we did, and that we’ll see you all again next year!
