Well, this has been a strange year or so, hasn’t it? We are hoping now that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and, all being well, will be holding the 2021 Wirral Open Studio Tour on 11th-12th September. We hope we will be seeing you then, we’ve missed you!
Applications for artists will open in April – if you would like to be notified please make sure you have signed up to our artists mailing list.
Wirral Open Studio Tour in collaboration with Staacks Gallery
While we were disappointed to have to cancel this year’s Wirral Open Studio Tour, we do now have a little good news. The lovely people at Staacks Gallery in West Kirby have offered the WOST2020 artists the opportunity to put on an exhibition of works throughout the month of July.
Staacks will be reopening on Thursday 2nd July and 40 of the artists who would have been opening their studios this year will have work on display. We know this is not quite the same for you as visiting a studio to see how things are created, but it will give you a little taster of our work, enable you to discover new artists and may even help you to decide which studios you would like to visit next year.
We encourage you as an art lover to go along to view the exhibition if you are able, support your local artists and also support one of our valuable local independent galleries.
The gallery has been deep cleaned and rearranged inside to facilitate a one-way system. In accordance with guidelines, numbers inside the gallery will be limited so do please be patient if you happen to visit at a busy time.
It is great sadness that we have taken the decision to cancel the 2020 Wirral Open Studio Tour due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. However, we hope you will still be able to visit our artists ‘virtually’ and the 2020 artist line up is now available here.
Thank you to all the amazing artists who have applied to take part in the 2020 Wirral Open Studio Tour. We are sifting through the applications now before beginning the hard work of putting the tour together.
Artists will receive confirmation soon and we will publish the list of selected artists here as soon as we can.
Calling all Wirral artists … Applications for the 2020 Wirral Open Studio Tour are now open!
We would like to invite Wirral based professional and semi-professional fine and applied artists to submit their applications to take part in this year’s Wirral Open Studio Tour.
The 2020 event will take place over the weekend of 13th-14th June and as ever we are aiming to make it the best yet. The open studio weekend is different from any other local arts event, giving visitors the opportunity to see artists in their working environment and to really engage with what they, and their work, are all about. Our visitors tell us that this is one event they really look forward to each year, planning their own ‘tour’ of the studios with great care.
Last year, 65 artists benefited from taking part, welcoming hundreds of visitors from Wirral and surrounding areas and many from further afield into their studios. These artists made sales, accepted new commissions, created valuable contacts and generally found that there is really no substitute for just talking to people about your work.
If you would like to take part this year, please apply using our online form here. The deadline for all submissions is midnight, Sunday 2nd February 2020.
We look forward to hearing from you!
If you have any questions or are wondering whether the event is right for you then please get in touch.
The 2020 Wirral Open Studio Tour will take place over the weekend of the 13th-14th June. Applications for artists to take part in the event will be open from 6th January to 2nd February 2020. Get the dates in your diary now!
We have some sad news to share with Studio Tour visitors…
Bob Blackburn, a talented artist and true gentleman, who took part in many Wirral Open Studio Tours, passed away this week at the age of 92.
For those who didn’t know him, he worked for many years as a respected teacher of art, whilst also pursuing his own creative path, painting mainly in oils. Throughout his long career, he held many one-man shows across Wales and North West England.
He joined the Wirral Open Studio Tour in 2010 and opened his house in Meols each year until 2017, enthusiastically welcoming the many, many visitors who loved to see his work. Although failing health meant that he was unable to take part in the Tour for the past two years, he still felt compelled to create and, with the help of his carer, was still able to paint until two weeks ago..
For anyone who knew Bob, or who would like to show support, his funeral will be held on Thurs 21st November, 3.30pm at St Luke’s Church, 19 Market St, Hoylake, CH47 2BF
Rest in peace Bob, and thank you for sharing your love of art with so many. xx
You may have heard the sad news of the devastating fire at Carla Pownall’s studio last week; her studio and all her equipment were destroyed in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately her insurance will not pay out so we are raising money to get her up and running again – hopefully well before our open studios weekend next June! If you would like to help with a donation – however small, every little helps – there is a Just Giving page here.
If you have not had the chance to visit Carla’s studio then you can find out a bit more about it in this lovely video.
We are pleased to announce the artist line up for the 2019 Wirral Open Studio Tour. This year we have 65 artists taking part in 34 studiosright across Wirral so there will be plenty to see!
Our tour guide brochures are being distributed to libraries, community centres, galleries, cafes and shops right across the peninsula now so you will be able to pick one up to plan your own tour of the studios, or you can download one here.
