Dennis Spicer

I paint small, intimate oil paintings of still lifes or “nature morte”, literally “dead nature”.  In some cases this will be literally true as my subject matter can include animal skulls, dead leaves and feathers and other bits and pieces of discarded nature.

My most recent paintings have included birds’ nests that have been found abandoned or knocked to the ground. These small structures are both immensely fragile yet also strong enough to nurture and protect the young birds as they grow. They are endlessly fascinating to paint. Occasionally I will leave the studio to paint a landscape.

I exhibit regularly with the Royal Institute Of Oil Painters at the Mall Galleries in London as well as in galleries in the North West. The Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead holds three of my paintings in its permanent collection.
