I paint still lives, figures and landscapes, but the unifying idea is light. The quotidian objects of the still lives are gathered from charity shops and from the natural environment and are put together and painted from observation to create balance and harmony within the picture frame.
The landscapes are a relatively recent preoccupation and are painted differently. Using location drawings, paintings, photographs and memory as well as painting on the spot, I paint more freely and intuitively changing and modifying the image until I am satisfied that it represents something I was experiencing at the time. Living on the coast it is tempting to go for the obvious, but I have looked for places around Ashton Park and Caldy Woods that, like the objects in the still lives, are perhaps overlooked and taken for granted.
