Emma Johnson is a painter working primarily in oils. She has recently set up her own business Art Instead following a 10 year teaching career.
Emma’s preferred subject is portraiture on various scales, combining elements of photorealism with a nod to expressionism. Her work strives to capture the personality of the sitter using layers of oil to depict a vulnerability in the facial features, alongside bold colours to add a sense of playfulness. Emma’s work illustrates a connection with people and the narratives they project.
Over the past 6 months Emma’s work has gained exposure following commissions from film company ‘Shut Out The Light’ and numerous portrait commissions for the private collection of Dennis Skinner MP. Currently her time is spent on commission work with subjects ranging from portraits to animals and landscapes. Emma has recently begun a new range of work exploring the fun and colourful sides of local landmarks. She sells limited edition prints and cards of her work.
