Helen Smith

I work with kiln formed or ‘warm’ glass, layering sheet glass and glass powders and firing them in my kiln to create a range of beautifully tactile semi-abstract glass wall panels and sculptural objects.

I like my work to evoke a sense of place, drawing inspiration from the textures and colours – both natural and manmade – found within the landscape. I have always been fascinated by the oft overlooked textures all around us, from rusting metal to weathered stone and decaying plaster, from peeling paint to the cracking bark on the logs in our woodpile – and it is these that find their way into my work.

I have been working with glass for over 10 years now, since gaining a degree in Applied Arts at Glyndwr University, where I specialised in glass, and exhibit both locally and further afield. Away from the studio I am a co-founder of the LAKE gallery in West Kirby.
