Mary Bryning

Since studying geography the patterns created on the land both naturally and by human activity have always fascinated me.

Using techniques of applique and machine embroidery with hand dyed fabrics, I make images of familiar places based on maps and aerial views, and more abstract images inspired by natural forms and landscapes. I enjoy experimenting with different techniques to reflect the subject matter, and am currently using natural dyes, monoprints and ecoprints (contact printing of leaves and flowers), recycling fabrics as far as possible.
