I live in West Kirby where at low tide there is an unending vista out to Wales and the Irish sea. The light particularly at dawn and sunset is spectacular. To paraphrase Philip Larkin “the rivers level drifting breadth where sky and water meet and beyond it the deep blue air that shows nothing and is nowhere, and is endless.”
My work is inspired by the connections between these empty spaces, the curve of the lake path, the Welsh coastline, the isolation of Hilbre Island and the similarity in shapes and textures in the magnificent Stone Pine Tree overlooking the village. My son’s recent move to the Lake District has uncovered new curves, colours and landscape to explore. I work in oils and soft pastels sometimes applied to a gesso base hand formed to make a textured ground. My photography attempts to capture the endless empty Larkin light.
