Sue Kidd

Starting with playful marks using charcoal, coloured pencils, ink and graphite I work intuitively building up layers of paint. While there may be an initial idea or inspiration, I’m happier with the pieces that have evolved rather than when I aim for a particular end result. Colours are chosen, layers built and emotions, ideas or fleeting memories are sparked informing the next stage of the painting until finally the painting feels finished.

While this is very much a personal exploration, we all have emotions and feelings in common which allows the possibility of bridging the space between artist and viewer. I work mainly in acrylics but enjoy experimenting with other media such as oil and cold wax. I’m drawn to the use of glazes over layers of paint to create a sense of depth and subtlety, contrasting that with more opaque layers.
