I am a textile designer/maker inspired by the concept of nests and nesting. Employing traditional embroidery techniques I explore the idea of a sheltering, comfortable and secure place for birds, animals and human to be.
I enjoy the simplicity of decorative hand stitching, finding it absorbing, if time consuming. It chimes with my view that sustainability and simplicity are important. Most of my pieces use reclaimed or recycled fabric and thread.
I feel my work is changing just as nature does, and in exploring new ideas using folk art techniques I get a deeper understanding of my own need to belong. My work has always been celebratory and little quirky and this lighthearted approach is evident in some of my nest work. Contemporary abstract textiles sit alongside these pieces as milestones on the creative journey.
